"Dharma (good activities) to perform in the New Year: Chant Aum 21 times a day in the morning. Practice deep and long breaths. Feed birds, animals, ants and humans daily with at least three handfuls of birdseed, grain, sugar or bread respectively. Human beings can express hunger and thirst; other creatures simply die. Therefore, services to livings beings is service to God.
Stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol renders the mind ineffective, and the ills are many including the individual and domestic economy. Mahatma Gandhi always prescribed teetotalism. A main cause for poverty among the lower classes is alcohol.
Stop smoking. The dangers of smoking are well known: Lung cancer, weakening of the heart and thickening of the blood vessels, etc.
Stop meat-eating. Eating flesh induces violent tendencies and animal diseases. The type of protein we need is the one that is Satvic, protects us and not that which destroys us.
Drink milk, eat fruits and nuts. They generate constructive, virtuous and spiritual thoughts."
